Kimberly Cockrill writes romantic comedy as Kimberly Jayne and gothic dark fantasy as Dark Kimber. Most people know her simply as Kimber.
A storyteller since the age of five, Kimber has written just about everything for websites, clients, publications, and businesses. She wrote humor features for Playgirl magazine, appeared in the 2011 Austin production of Ann Imig’s Listen to Your Mother Show, and created the popular mid-aughts humor blog Fragrant Liar. Her professional life has also included small-business ownership, marketing, writing, and editing.
As Kimberly Jayne, she writes unconventional romantic comedies populated by deeply flawed characters who inhabit worlds where the hilarious is tinged with complexity and the dramatic is rife with irony.
As Dark Kimber, she explores people’s hidden selves and plays “what if” with their lives. She is fascinated by the things we bury, the things we fear, and the things we might become when the rules we’ve lived by no longer apply. She likes her fantasy gothic, her characters complicated, and her monsters difficult to distinguish from everyone else.
Kimber's favorite quote about writing comes from Robert Heinlein: “Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards.” Kimber has often said that her thoughts may not always be clean, but her hands are.
The mother of four daughters, Kimber grew up in Arizona and spent most of her adult life in Texas. She now lives in Georgia with her favorite feline, Louie Floof.

Blood of the Oracle
Book One of the Profane Inheritance Trilogy
For sixteen years, clairvoyant Maia Kelly has lived as a penitent in a Victorian abbey, condemned for a childhood killing and praying for redemption. But when a crimson comet crosses the sky, a dark hunger awakens within her—and Maia discovers her true inheritance: she is the daughter of the King of Purgatory and the prophesied Oracle who may end a thousand-year war between demons and seraphs. Hunted by a ruthless seraph prince and claimed by a destiny she never chose, Maia must decide what no prophecy can dictate: not what she is becoming, but who she chooses to become.
About the Profane Inheritance Trilogy
The Profane Inheritance Trilogy expands from Gothic dark fantasy to epic dark fantasy. The story follows a clairvoyant woman caught between warring celestial powers, a divided kingdom of exiles, and an ancient prophecy that promises salvation at a terrible price.
Raised in a Victorian abbey and condemned since childhood as irredeemable, Maia Kelly knows nothing of the supernatural inheritance waiting in her blood—until her body begins awakening with a hunger that feeds on human life force. Soon she is hunted by lethal, silver-winged seraphs, drawn into the hidden world of Purgatory, and claimed as the long-awaited Oracle who could end a thousand-year war.
But Maia is no obedient savior.
Branded for her failures and distrusted even by some of the demons she is meant to save, Maia trains under Rhemy Sauvage, a formidable commander of the Magnus Inferna, to defend herself against the seraphs. As their uneasy alliance deepens into a dangerous attraction, Maia discovers that Purgatory is no united kingdom awaiting its deliverance. Its ancient rulers cling to the memory of Celestia, the ancestral homeland from which they were violently exiled. Others have forged new lives in the shadows of that defeat and refuse to sacrifice their hard-won freedom for a prophecy they no longer believe in. Beneath the fragile peace, heretics conspire, old loyalties fracture, and dangerous secrets threaten to ignite a rebellion from within.
As the war spills between the mortal realm, Purgatory, and Celestia, Maia follows visions of the living and the dead, uncovers the buried history of the Divinians, and searches for the mysterious Warrior of Ash and Light—a figure foretold to appear beneath a blood moon and alter the course of the war. Her quest carries her through the rival kingdoms of Purgatory, where enemies may offer sanctuary and allies may harbor the darkest betrayals, back to the ruined abbey where her story began, and ultimately toward the ruthless Imperator of Celestia.
But the deeper Maia ventures into the prophecy, the more she questions the salvation it promises—and the terrible price it may demand. For the war between seraphs and demons was born of forbidden bloodlines, ancient betrayals, and a history written by those who claimed the right to rule.
Now demons, seraphs, rebels, exiles, and kings have inherited a conflict begun long before they were born. With the fate of three realms hanging in the balance, Maia must survive those who would use her for their own ends, those who would burn her at the stake, and those who would kneel before her.
She cannot choose the blood she inherited. But she may yet decide what becomes of the world it has condemned.
